Day 0: Land Nav

When you don’t know where you are, every direction feels like the wrong one.
Day 0: Land Navigation is a one-day workshop that builds practical navigation skills—and, more importantly, the confidence and capability to move with purpose when maps and bearings matter.

This is not a class on orienteering. It’s about practical navigation—understanding maps, terrain, and direction so you can make informed decisions anywhere from rural backroads to the middle of the woods. We design this course to take you from uncertain to certain: you’ll leave knowing how to find your position, plan a route, and execute it with conviction.

The morning begins in the classroom, where we break down the essentials:

  • How to read and interpret different types of maps

  • Understanding scale, contour lines, and topographic features

  • Finding and using True, Magnetic, and Grid North

  • Declination—what it means, why it matters, and how to correct for it

  • Measuring distance, plotting azimuths, and using a compass accurately

After lunch, we move into the field for a hands-on practical where you’ll apply everything you learned. Students will practice using compasses and maps to identify landmarks, determine their location, and navigate a short course using terrain association, handrails, and backstops. The focus is on repeatable techniques and decision-making habits that build competence fast.

By the end of the day, you’ll know how to orient yourself anywhere, verify your position, and confidently move through unfamiliar terrain using nothing more than a map, a compass, and sharpened observation skills.

At ZeroPoint Training, we believe the safest and most effective navigator is the one who acts with confidence and competence. Our mission is to give you the tools and the mindset to trust your navigation skills when it matters most.
